Dale Mann Art Contest

Submission Deadline: April 1, 2026

Purpose

The purpose of this Student Art Contest is to give students a platform to express their artistic and creative skills as they learn about U.S. and aviation history and the contributions, courage, and sacrifices of the men and women who designed, built, flew, and maintained these iconic aircraft as well as the missions they completed.

 

Subject Matter

All aspects of U.S. Marine Corps aviation, past and present.

Who is Eligible?

All Students in grades 6-8 (middle school) and 9-12 (high school) in the Saddleback Valley, Irvine, and Tustin

Unified School Districts.

Awards

Awards will be made in two categories:

Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-12.

​

Cash Prizes in each of the two categories:

​

First Place       $300
Second Place $200
Third Place     $100
 
​The teachers who have winners in the art contest will also be receiving a $200 prize. 
​

Requirements

  • One Entry per student.

  • The only medium that will be accepted is digital media art. No painting or drawing submission will be a valid entry for this year.

  • No Signature on the front of the artwork. Please utilize the text boxes on the submission form to fill out student information only.

  • No fully AI generated art pieces, 5 progress pictured must be included for all submissions.

  • High quality picture or scan is needed from a top-down view of the artwork. If the image is poor, it may not be eligible.

  • A teacher who has overseen the work's progress must submit the entry, not a parent or a student. When the student is ready to give their teacher the submission, the artist questionnaire should be filled out and given to the teacher with the art work.

  • All entries must be original in concept, design, and execution and not violate U.S. copyright laws.

  • Artist’s name and a title and description of the work must be included in each electronic entry.

  • The title and inspiration for your piece must be attached to your artwork. 

  • Entries are to be submitted electronically by parents/guardians or teachers. Winners will be asked to deliver their original artwork to the foundation for scanning.

  • A release form signed by a parent/guardian will be required of winning artists. Release forms will be sent to students once they are named finalists.

How Artwork will be Evaluated

 

A committee representing the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation will complete the initial assessment of the artwork. A committee of professional artists will rank the finalists based on knowledge of the theme, creativity, and originality.

​

Winning artwork will be framed and displayed at the Flying Leatherneck Historical

Foundation Award Ceremony!

Photos featuring all aspects of USMC aviation are widely available online. Photos of the aircraft in the museum’s collection are located in our aircraft gallery

Submission Forms

To make submissions as easy as possible, we are accepting entries electronically. The contest submission form is at the bottom of this page. Parents/guardians or teachers should submit the entries, not students.

​

Please keep the original artwork.  Finalists also will be required to submit a release form signed by their parent/guardian at that time.

​

  1. Complete the student/artist questionnaire about the artwork. These questions should be completed by the student. Answers can should be typed in the fields provided below. The answers should be given to a parent or teacher for submission.

  2. Attached a copy of the artwork with the form below. The file should be 15MB or less. Good luck!
