OUR HISTORY
A LEGACY BUILT ON SERVICE
The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum was founded in 1989 by a group of retired Marines and Marine aviators from Orange County, led by Brigadier General Jay Huber at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro.
In 1999, as part of the Department of Defense’s Base Realignment and Closure process, the Command Museum, along with the Third Marine Aircraft Wing, relocated to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. There, the museum continued its mission under the leadership of Major General Bobby Butcher until 2021.

In 2020, the leadership of MCAS Miramar announced that the base could no longer accommodate the museum, and the museum closed its doors in April 2021.
After more than three decades of preserving and honoring the history of Marine Corps aviation, the museum embarked on a new chapter in 2023 through a public-private partnership among the City of Irvine, the United States Marine Corps, and the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation.
